Paintings, Stories and Details

Every now and then something materialises that I would like to paint. These however do not fall into the other eight portfolios and are therefore posted here.

Vespa

The Story

We have a wonderful pizzeria closeby, Forneria Italia, which I highly recommend!

As part of the decor, it has some blocked posters on the wall that are well selected and creates a “little Italy” in Melkbosstrand. One of the posters, with a red Vespa scooter next to a typical Italian building, has always been my favourite.

One evening, after a grappa or two, quite late in the evening, I was challenged by Mauro the owner, Michael and Amir to paint it. I took up the challenge and it was one of my lock-down activities that kept me sane. What a pleasure it was to do, but I must say, getting the red right, took some stern words from Izaan my daughter, support enthusiastically by Dainty, my wife

Firefighter with Hose

The Story

The fires in the Western Cape and elsewhere have been devastating, destroying lives, properties and vegetation for decades and Working on Fire have been keeping us safe for many of those years.

I started off by painting two scenes, with aircraft in them. Aircraft and their crew are there in a supporting role, essential off course, yet it is the foot soldiers that do the real hard work and who sweat at the ‘coalface’.

I decided to finish this series with three paintings of the fire fighter working in a really hazardous and difficult environment, to save lives and protect property.

The fotos I used I collated in Photoshop, my first try and come from a video that  Linda Kieck sent me.

Herewith the series, which gave me great pleasure to paint and that kept me busy over Christmas (2018)

I do not know who the photographers were, but their photographic genious gave me inspiration.  Thanks to them who help keep us informed through their creativity and effort, which sometimes can be very dangerous work.

These paintings were auctioned off for a WoF charity event.

Koos Kieck Working on Fire

The Story

The fires in the Western Cape and elsewhere have been devastating, destroying lives, properties and vegetation for decades, and Working on Fire have been keeping us safe for many of those years.

I started off by painting two scenes, with aircraft in them. This one shows Koos Kieck, an ex SAAF colleague of mine, fighting fires in an AT802 Air Tractor.

I do not know who the photographer was, but his/her photographic genious gave me inspiration.

This painting was part of a collection of five that was auctioned off for a WoF charity event.
